Discover more about Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village

Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village, located 24 km east of Maseru, is a significant national monument in Lesotho. This sandstone plateau served as the stronghold of King Moshoeshoe I, who established the Basotho nation in the 19th century. The name Thaba Bosiu, meaning "Mountain at Night," originates from Moshoeshoe I and his people arriving at night, and a legend that the mountain grew taller at night to intimidate enemies. Rising 106 meters from the surrounding valley, the plateau provided a natural fortress with its steep cliffs and limited access points. Moshoeshoe I and his people settled on the mountain in 1824, using it as a hideout after migrating from Butha-Buthe. The mountain's large area could hold enough livestock and provisions to support the people during a lengthy siege. The Basotho withstood attacks from various forces, including Mzilikazi and the Boers, and the mountain remained unconquered. Today, Thaba Bosiu is a major tourist destination, offering an immersive cultural experience. Visitors can explore the remnants of stone buildings and traditional huts, as well as San rock art and several springs. The Thaba Bosiu Cultural Village features a museum with exhibits about the formation of the Basotho nation and its cultural heritage. The site also includes a conference center, a cultural village, and accommodation in traditional rondavel-style huts. Climbing to the summit offers superb views and the chance to see the graves of King Moshoeshoe I and other royals.
