Gola National Forest, situated in northwestern Liberia, represents a significant portion of the Upper Guinean rainforest, a region recognized for its exceptional biodiversity and high rates of endemism. This forest, contiguous with the Gola Rainforest National Park in Sierra Leone, forms a transboundary conservation area, crucial for protecting numerous plant and animal species.The forest's terrain includes dense tropical rainforests, rolling hills, and essential river systems. It serves as a sanctuary for diverse wildlife, including mammals, birds, amphibians, and a wide array of tree species. The Gola National Forest is home to over 49 mammal species, 327 bird species, and 43 amphibian species. Birdwatchers are drawn to the forest due to its varied avian species, some of which are globally threatened.Historically, the Gola Forest has been a critical conservation area, providing habitat for numerous species. In 2016, the Liberian government officially designated 88,000 hectares of the rainforest as the Gola Forest National Park, reinforcing its protected status. This action was the result of collaborative conservation efforts between the Liberian government, the Society for the Conservation of Nature of Liberia, and the RSPB.
