Martyr's Square: Tripoli's Historical Heart

Martyr's Square, situated in downtown Tripoli, stands as a powerful symbol of Libyan history and resilience. Originally named Piazza Italia during Italian colonial rule, it became Independence Square after Libya gained independence in 1951. Following the 1969 revolution, Muammar Gaddafi renamed it Green Square to represent his political ideology. During the 2011 civil war, Libyan rebel groups seized control and renamed it Martyr's Square to honor those who died fighting against Gaddafi's government. The square is surrounded by remarkable architectural landmarks, including the Red Castle (As-saraya Al-hamra), which houses Libya's Antiquities Department and the National Museum.
