Following Muammar Gaddafi's 1969 revolution, it became Green Square, symbolizing his political ideology. After the 2011 revolution, the square was renamed Martyrs' Square to honor those who died fighting against Gaddafi's government.The square is surrounded by Tripoli's main commercial center and is a major tourist attraction. It features a large fountain designed by an Italian architect. The Red Castle Museum, Libya's national museum, is located on one side of the square. Omar Mukhtar Avenue, one of North Africa's longest avenues, Independence Street, 24 December Avenue, and Mizran Street all converge at Martyrs' Square.Today, Martyrs' Square is a vibrant space where locals and tourists gather.
