Discover more about Severan Forum

Located in Leptis Magna, Libya, the Severan Forum offers a captivating glimpse into the grandeur of Roman civic life. Constructed during the reign of Emperor Septimius Severus (193-211 AD), who was born in Leptis Magna, the forum was part of a larger urban renewal project designed to honor his native city. The Severan Forum was designed to rival the forums in Rome, marking Leptis Magna as one of the principal cities of Roman Africa. The forum was a walled structure measuring 170 meters in length and 80 meters in width. It featured tall, arcaded porticos on three sides, which housed shops and cauponas (ancient Roman restaurants), while a massive temple dedicated to the Severan family stood on the fourth side. The porticos were constructed with columned arches of green and white striped Cipolin marble, topped with white Pentelic marble, the same marble used to build the Parthenon. Each arch was adorned with medallions of gorgons and scyllae. The basilica, inspired by the Basilica Ulpia in Rome, was a massive building measuring approximately 95 meters long and 35 meters wide. Its rectangular interior was divided into three naves by columns of red Egyptian granite. The architrave above the columns bore inscriptions recording the building's inception under Septimius Severus and its completion by his son Caracalla in 216 AD. The apses were decorated with carved columns depicting scenes from the myths of Dionysus and the labors of Hercules. Initially a public and political building, the basilica was converted into a Christian church in the 4th century AD. Today, visitors can explore the expansive ruins of the Severan Forum, imagining the lively debates and vibrant marketplace that once thrived within these walls. The site is strategically located near other significant archaeological sites within Leptis Magna, making it an ideal starting point for exploring the city's rich history.
