Kathedrale St. Florin: A Neo-Gothic Masterpiece in Vaduz

Kathedrale St. Florin, also known as the Cathedral of St. Florin, is a striking neo-Gothic structure that dominates the skyline of Vaduz, Liechtenstein. Built between 1869 and 1873 by Austrian architect Friedrich von Schmidt, who also contributed to the Cologne Cathedral and Vienna City Hall, it replaced an earlier chapel dating back to the late 1st millennium. The cathedral was elevated to its current status in 1997, becoming the center of the Archdiocese of Vaduz. The cathedral's architecture features a tall spire, pointed arches, and intricate stonework, exemplifying the neo-Gothic style. Inside, visitors are greeted by an atmosphere of serenity, enhanced by stained glass windows, a large organ, and elegant woodwork. The stained-glass windows were designed in 1965/66 by Martin Häusle and later completed by his daughter. The high altar, adorned with statues of the four evangelists, was created in 1873 by the Josef Leimer art workshop in Vienna. Beyond its architectural and artistic merits, the Kathedrale St. Florin holds significant cultural and historical importance. It serves as a place of worship and a symbol of the connection between Liechtenstein's Catholic faith and its monarchy. The Princely Crypt, located next to the cathedral, is the burial site of the Liechtenstein royal family, including Prince Franz Joseph II and Princess Gina. Visitors can explore the cathedral's interior, admire the stained-glass windows and artwork, and pay respects at the Royal Crypt.
