The building itself, originally named Villa Gülich, was constructed in 1848 by a jewelry manufacturer. In 1887, it was purchased by Gustav Prinz von und zu Thurn und Taxis, giving the building its current name. The city of Bregenz acquired the property in 1915. Since 1953, the Künstlerhaus has been home to the Professional Association of Visual Artists of Vorarlberg. The association uses the space to host monthly exhibitions, international programs, and the city's official summer exhibition.
