Burg Gutenberg, perched 70 meters above the village of Balzers, is a captivating medieval castle with a rich history dating back to the Neolithic period. Archaeological excavations have revealed prehistoric artifacts, including the 12 cm Mars von Gutenberg figurine, now showcased in the Liechtenstein National Museum.The castle's story began as a medieval church and cemetery on a hilltop. In the early 12th century, the cemetery was removed, and the church structure was gradually fortified with a surrounding wall, forming a simple keep. Over the centuries, the castle was owned by various nobles, including the Lords of Frauenberg and the House of Habsburg. It served primarily to guard the borderlands.In the 17th and 18th centuries, Burg Gutenberg lost its military significance and suffered damage from fires. In 1795, after a fire in Balzers, its stones were used to rebuild the town. Restored in the early 20th century by architect Egon Rheinberger, the castle now serves as a museum and event venue.Visitors can explore the castle's well-preserved rooms and enjoy panoramic views of the Rhine Valley and surrounding mountains. The bailey is open to visitors free of charge throughout the year. From May to October, the castle chapel and rose garden are open every Sunday. Guided tours are available for a fee, providing deeper insights into the castle's history. Burg Gutenberg also hosts cultural events and concerts, adding to its appeal as a vibrant cultural hub.
