Discover more about Eriskircher Ried

Eriskircher Ried, nestled on the shores of Lake Constance, is a sprawling 552-hectare (1364 acre) nature reserve, the largest of its kind on the lake's northern edge. Situated between the Rotach and Schussen river mouths near Eriskirch and Friedrichshafen, this protected area boasts a rich tapestry of landscapes, including alluvial forests, wetlands, and the lake's natural shoreline. Designated as a nature reserve in 1939, with expansions in 1983, Eriskircher Ried is a haven for diverse flora and fauna. Over 600 species of flowering plants thrive here, alongside 280 recorded bird species, making it a paradise for ornithologists. The varying water levels, influenced by snowmelt from the Alps, create unique habitats that support a wide array of life. In spring, the meadows burst into a sea of blue with the blooming of the Siberian iris, the largest population of this species in Europe. Visitors can explore the Ried through a network of walking trails and observation platforms. The Naturschutzzentrum Eriskirch (Nature Conservation Center), located in the former train station, offers insights into the region's natural history with exhibits, guided tours, and family activities. The best times to visit are from April to early June and September to October, to witness migratory birds or the iris blooms. Keep an eye out for swans in spring, nightingales in late April and May, and various waterfowl throughout the year. Whether you're a nature enthusiast, a birdwatcher, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Eriskircher Ried offers an immersive experience in one of Lake Constance's most precious natural environments.
