Getting There
Car
If you are driving from the capital city Antananarivo, take Route Nationale 7 (RN7) south towards Fianarantsoa. The journey is approximately 400 kilometers and will take around 8 hours. Once you reach Fianarantsoa, continue south on the RN7 for about 70 kilometers until you reach the town of Ambalavao. From Ambalavao, follow signs to Andringitra National Park, which is around 30 kilometers away. The last part of the journey will be on a dirt road, which may require a 4x4 vehicle depending on the weather conditions.
Public Transportation
To reach Andringitra Massif via public transport, first take a taxi-brousse (shared minibus) from Antananarivo to Fianarantsoa. The journey takes about 10 hours and costs approximately 30,000 MGA. From Fianarantsoa, take another taxi-brousse to Ambalavao, which will take around 1 hour and cost about 5,000 MGA. In Ambalavao, you may need to hire a private taxi or arrange a local guide to take you to Andringitra National Park, which is about 30 kilometers away. Be prepared to negotiate the fare with the driver.
Local Guide
Once you arrive in Ambalavao, it is highly recommended to hire a local guide for the remaining journey to Andringitra Massif. Guides can help you navigate the dirt roads and ensure your safety. The cost for hiring a local guide can vary, but expect to pay around 50,000 MGA for a day trip. This can also include transportation to the park entrance.
