Getting There

  • Car

    If you are driving from the center of Betsiboka, head south on Route Nationale 4 (RN4) towards Antananarivo. Continue for about 30 kilometers until you reach the intersection with Route Nationale 6 (RN6) at the town of Mahajanga. Turn left onto RN6 and continue for approximately 80 kilometers. Look for signs directing you towards Réserve spéciale d’Ankarana. The entrance to the reserve will be on your right after you pass through the village of Ankarana.

  • Public Transportation

    From Betsiboka, take a taxi-brousse (shared minibus) heading towards Mahajanga. The journey will take about 1.5 to 2 hours. Once you arrive in Mahajanga, transfer to another taxi-brousse going to Antananarivo, which will pass near the entrance to Réserve spéciale d’Ankarana. Inform the driver of your destination and ensure you are dropped off at the closest point to the reserve entrance. This leg of the trip should cost around 15,000 Ariary.

  • Hiking/Walking

    Upon arriving at the entrance of Réserve spéciale d’Ankarana, you may need to walk a short distance to the visitor center for registration and to gather information. Be prepared for some walking, as the reserve is best explored on foot. Bring plenty of water and wear comfortable shoes.
