Lac Itasy: A Serene Escape into Nature

Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, head towards the town of Ampefy, which is the closest town to Lac Itasy. From Antananarivo, take the RN1 highway towards the west for approximately 80 km until you reach the junction to RN43. Turn left onto RN43 and continue for about 30 km until you reach Ampefy. Once in Ampefy, follow the signs to Lac Itasy, which is just a short drive (around 15-20 minutes) from the center of Ampefy. Parking is available near the lake.

• Public Transportation

  To reach Lac Itasy by public transportation, first take a taxi-brousse (shared minibus) from Antananarivo to Ampefy. The taxi-brousse terminal is located at the southern end of the city (Gare Routière de Fasan’ny Karana). The fare is approximately 15,000 Ariary and the journey takes about 2-3 hours depending on traffic. Once you arrive in Ampefy, you can either walk to Lac Itasy (approximately 5 km, about 1 hour on foot) or you can hire a local taxi to take you directly to the lake for about 5,000-10,000 Ariary.

• Bicycle

  For the more adventurous traveler, renting a bicycle in Ampefy is a great way to reach Lac Itasy. You can rent a bike at one of the local shops in Ampefy for around 10,000 Ariary per day. The ride to Lac Itasy is approximately 5 km and takes about 20-30 minutes. Follow the road signs towards the lake, and enjoy the scenic views along the route.

• Walking

  If you prefer to walk from Ampefy to Lac Itasy, it is a straightforward journey of about 5 km. Start from the center of Ampefy and head west following the main road. The path is generally well-marked with signs leading you to Lac Itasy. This walk will take you approximately 1 hour and offers beautiful views of the surrounding countryside.
