If you are driving in Washington County, start by getting onto US-1 N. Continue on US-1 N for approximately 45 miles until you reach the junction with ME-3 N. Take ME-3 N for about 16 miles. Merge onto I-95 N toward Augusta. After approximately 30 miles, take exit 109A toward US-202 E/ME-11 S. Continue on US-202 E for about 2 miles. Turn right onto Mt Vernon Ave. The Site of Ballard’s Sawmill will be on your left at 36 Mt Vernon Ave, Augusta, ME 04330. Parking is available nearby.

If you are using public transportation, start by taking a bus from any location in Washington County to Bangor. From Bangor, you can catch a Concord Coach Lines bus heading to Augusta. On arriving in Augusta, you will need to take a local taxi or rideshare service to reach 36 Mt Vernon Ave, as public transit options may not directly service this location. Be sure to check the bus schedules in advance, as there may be limited service on weekends and holidays.

Bicycle
For those who are adventurous and wish to bike, start at the center of Machias. Follow the scenic route along the coast on ME-1 S for approximately 40 miles. Once you reach the junction with ME-3 N, take that route for another 16 miles. As you approach Augusta, use the bike lanes where available. Once in Augusta, navigate to Mt Vernon Ave, where the Site of Ballard’s Sawmill is located. Make sure to wear a helmet and follow all local biking laws.
