Getting There

• Car

  If you're traveling by car from Lilongwe, the capital of Malawi, head south on the M1 road for approximately 210 kilometers. You will pass through towns such as Dedza and Ntcheu. Look for signs directing you towards Lake Malawi as you approach the area. Once you reach the town of Monkey Bay, follow the signs to the lake, which is located just a few kilometers from the town center. Depending on traffic and road conditions, this journey may take around 3 to 4 hours. Ensure you have enough fuel and supplies for the trip, as services may be limited along the way.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, take a minibus from the Lilongwe bus terminal heading to Monkey Bay. The minibuses leave regularly and the journey will take about 4 to 5 hours, costing around 1,500 to 3,000 MWK (Malawian Kwacha), depending on the vehicle and operator. Once you arrive in Monkey Bay, you can either walk to the lake, which is about 3 kilometers from the bus station, or take a local taxi for a small fee. Make sure to confirm the fare before starting your taxi ride.

• Taxi

  If you prefer a more direct route, you can hire a taxi from Lilongwe directly to Lake Malawi. This option is more expensive, typically ranging from 15,000 to 25,000 MWK. The taxi ride will take approximately 3 hours, and you can enjoy the scenic views without the need for transfers. It's advisable to negotiate the fare beforehand and ensure the taxi is registered.

• Bicycle

  For the adventurous souls, cycling to Lake Malawi is an option! Starting from Lilongwe, take the M1 south towards Monkey Bay. The distance is around 210 kilometers, which could take several days depending on your cycling speed and stops. Make sure to carry enough water, food, and repair tools for your bike. There are various guesthouses and campsites along the way where you can rest before reaching the lake.
