Getting There

• Car

  If you are traveling by car, start from the main entrance of Kinabalu National Park at the Park Headquarters. Drive up Jalan Kundasang Kauluan, which is well-marked. The road is generally in good condition, but be cautious of winding turns and occasional wildlife on the road. The drive to the base of Mount Kinabalu takes approximately 30 minutes. Look for signs directing you to the Mount Kinabalu trailhead. There is parking available near the starting point of the hike, but be sure to arrive early to secure a spot.

• Public Transportation

  For those using public transportation, head to the nearest bus terminal in Kota Kinabalu. Look for a bus heading to Ranau; these buses frequently depart throughout the day. The fare is typically around RM 30-40. Ask the driver to drop you off at the entrance of Kinabalu National Park. From there, you can either walk or take a local taxi to the Park Headquarters. Local taxis may charge around RM 10-15 for the short trip. Once at the Park Headquarters, follow the signs to the Mount Kinabalu trailhead.

• Taxi

  If you prefer a more direct route, consider taking a taxi from Kota Kinabalu directly to Kinabalu National Park. This option is more expensive, with fares ranging from RM 150-250 depending on your negotiation skills. The taxi will take you straight to the Park Headquarters. Once there, you will need to walk or arrange for a local guide to take you to the Mount Kinabalu trailhead.

  Another convenient option is to join a guided tour that includes transportation to Mount Kinabalu. Many tour operators in Kota Kinabalu offer packages that cover transport, park fees, and a guide. Prices vary widely, so it’s advisable to shop around, but expect to pay approximately RM 200-400 per person.
