Discover more about Auberge d'Italie

Located in the heart of Birgu, Malta, the Auberge d'Italie stands as a historical landmark, transporting visitors back to Malta's past. Built in the 16th century (specifically between 1553 and 1554), this auberge served as a lodge for the Italian knights of the Order of St. John. The building was designed by Niccolò Bellavante. The Auberge d'Italie held a significant position due to the Italian Knights' influence within the Order, demonstrated by their prestigious role as Captain General of the Fleet. Uniquely, it was situated outside the collacchio to fulfill naval and maritime duties, incorporating a naval hospital and a chapel dedicated to St. Catherine. Today, only fragments of the original Auberge d'Italie remain, including a quoin, a partially defaced coat of arms, the base of a balcony, and some mouldings. The site was rebuilt as housing units between 1961 and 1963.
