Fort St. Angelo: A Bastion of Maltese History

Fort St. Angelo stands as a powerful monument to Malta's strategic importance and the countless lives sacrificed for its dominion. Situated at the tip of the Birgu peninsula, it dominates the Grand Harbour, offering panoramic views of the surrounding fortified towns.Originally known as Castrum Maris (Castle by the Sea), the site's history stretches back to prehistoric times, with evidence suggesting it was once home to a Phoenician temple. By the 13th century, a medieval castle occupied this strategic location. The arrival of the Knights of St. John in 1530 marked a turning point, as they transformed the partially ruined castle into their headquarters, renaming it Fort St. Angelo.The Knights extensively remodeled the fort, introducing the bastioned system of defense and artillery platforms. Fort St. Angelo played a crucial role during the Great Siege of 1565, withstanding Ottoman attacks and repelling the enemy. In 1689, military engineer Carlos Grunenbergh spearheaded its transformation into a formidable coastal defense, adding four gun platforms.From 1800 to 1979, the fort served as a shore establishment for the Royal Navy, bearing the names HMS Egmont and HMS St. Angelo. During World War II, it endured 69 direct hits, a testament to its strategic importance. Today, visitors can explore the restored sections of the fort, including an interpretation center, multimedia exhibitions, and staggering examples of artillery. The upper part of the fort, including the Magistral Palace, the Keep, and the Chapel of St. Anne, is also open to the public.
