Notre Dame Gate: A Baroque Sentinel of Birgu

Notre Dame Gate, also known as Notre Dame de la Grace Gate, the Cottonera Gate, or Bieb is-Sultan, is the main gate of the Cottonera Lines, located in Birgu (Vittoriosa), Malta. Constructed in 1675 under Grand Master Fra Nicola Cotoner's commission, it served as the primary entrance to the Cottonera Lines, a series of fortifications encircling Birgu, Senglea, and Cospicua. Designed by French military engineer Charles François de Mondion, the gate showcases a blend of Baroque artistry and military strength.The gate rises five levels high, making it the tallest structure in the area, and offering extensive views of the island and coastline. It features four bomb-proof casemates and a gatehouse that once housed the lifting mechanism for the portcullis. Musket ball indentations and graffiti left by soldiers offer glimpses into its past. In 1870, it became an adjunct to the nearby Cottonera Military Hospital.Visitors can explore the gate's intricate stonework and appreciate the coats-of-arms of the Knights of St. John. The surrounding historical district features narrow streets, cafes, and artisan shops. Nearby attractions include the Malta at War Museum, Fort St. Angelo, and the Inquisitor's Palace.
