Discover more about St Paul’s Catacombs

Delve into the depths of Malta's past at St. Paul's Catacombs, a sprawling subterranean complex located in Rabat. These catacombs represent the largest and earliest archaeological evidence of Christianity on the island, with origins tracing back to the Phoenician-Punic period. Initially located outside the walls of the ancient Roman city of Melite (present-day Mdina and Rabat), the site adheres to Roman law prohibiting burials within city limits. The catacombs consist of over 30 hypogea, with the main complex featuring a labyrinthine network of interconnected passages and tombs spanning over 2,000 square meters. As you explore the underground galleries, you'll encounter various burial chambers, including the 'agape tables' used for ceremonial meals commemorating the dead. The intricate carvings and architectural features reflect the diverse religious beliefs of those buried within, including Pagans, Christians, and Jews. St. Paul's Catacombs offer a unique insight into the burial customs and social fabric of Malta during the Roman period. The site was cleared and investigated in 1894 by Dr. A.A. Caruana, a pioneer in Christian-era archaeology in Malta. Today, visitors can explore over 20 of the catacombs, immersing themselves in the serene yet haunting atmosphere of this ancient burial ground.
