The Blue Lagoon is a stunning aquatic paradise situated off the coast of Malta, specifically on the island of Comino. This small island, also known as Kemmuna, has a rich history, having been inhabited since the Roman era and later used by the Knights of Malta for hunting and as a place of confinement for errant knights. The lagoon itself is a natural pool formed between Comino and the smaller islet of Cominotto, creating a sheltered bay with incredibly calm and clear waters. The lagoon's fame stems from its unbelievably turquoise waters, a result of the white sandy bottom and shallow depth. This makes it an ideal spot for swimmers of all levels, as well as snorkelers eager to explore the vibrant marine life. The surrounding rocky landscape adds to the dramatic beauty, with caves and coves dotting the coastline. Historically, Comino's strategic location made it a sought-after outpost for various civilizations, including the Phoenicians and Romans. In the Middle Ages, its secluded coves served as a haven for pirates, who would use the island as a base for launching attacks on passing ships. The Knights of St. John later recognized its importance, constructing Saint Mary's Tower in 1618 to defend against invaders; this tower still stands today. Today, the Blue Lagoon is a popular tourist destination, drawing visitors from around the globe. While the island has limited accommodations, with the Comino Hotel now closed for redevelopment, most visitors opt for day trips from Malta or Gozo. Despite its popularity, Comino remains a designated nature reserve and bird sanctuary, balancing tourism with conservation.
