Clapham Junction Cart Ruts: Malta's Prehistoric Mystery

Clapham Junction, officially known as Misraħ Għar Il-Kbir, is a captivating prehistoric site near Dingli Cliffs in Siġġiewi, Malta, famed for its mysterious cart ruts. This intricate network of tracks, carved into the limestone rock, has intrigued scientists and historians for centuries, with discussions about their origin dating back to the 17th century. Despite numerous theories, the age and purpose of these ruts remain largely unknown, with estimates ranging from the Neolithic to Medieval times.The site's English name, Clapham Junction, was inspired by an Englishman who noted the resemblance of the complex, crisscrossing tracks to the busy railway junction in London. The cart ruts, some up to 60 cm deep and spaced 110 to 140 cm apart, create an illusion of a vast railway switching yard.Several theories attempt to explain the ruts' origins. One suggests they were part of an irrigation system, while others propose they were used for transporting goods via sledges or carts. The most plausible theory suggests the ruts were created by wooden-wheeled carts eroding the soft limestone over time. Experiments have shown that the Maltese rock, weakened by rain, could have easily been grooved by carts following the same paths.Today, Clapham Junction cart ruts offer visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time and ponder the mysteries of Malta's past.
