Discover more about Fort Rinella

Fort Rinella, also known as Rinella Battery, offers a fascinating glimpse into Malta's British military past. Constructed between 1878 and 1886, the fort was strategically built to defend the Grand Harbour and protect British trade routes in the Mediterranean. The need for such fortifications arose from Britain's concern over Italy's growing naval power. The fort's main attraction is the Armstrong 100-ton gun, one of the largest muzzle-loading cannons ever made. This massive gun could fire a one-ton shell up to 8 miles, piercing 21 inches of wrought iron armor. Due to its size and weight, the gun required a steam-driven hydraulic system for loading and operation. Visitors can explore the fort's various structures, including the gun emplacements, bunkers, and defensive walls. The Malta Heritage Trust has extensively restored Fort Rinella, turning it into a living museum. Reenactments of Victorian military drills, signaling, and swordsmanship take place daily, offering an immersive experience. Knowledgeable guides in period uniforms lead tours, providing historical context and engaging stories. The fort also features a museum gallery dedicated to the history of the British Victorian Army. While at the fort, visitors can enjoy a guided tour, a film about the fort's history, and access to all displays. There's also a café for refreshments and souvenirs.
