Il-Maqluba, nestled in the village of Qrendi, Malta, is a remarkable geological formation with a captivating history. The name translates to 'the upside-down one' or 'inside-out one' in Maltese. This impressive sinkhole, approximately 165 feet wide and 50 feet deep, was created in 1343 during a severe winter storm or possibly an earthquake, when the roof of an underground cave collapsed.Legend has it that Il-Maqluba was formed as divine punishment. According to the tale, a sinful village once occupied the site, ignoring the warnings of a pious woman. God then caused the earth to swallow the village, sparing only the righteous woman. Some versions of the legend state that the angels then cast the village into the sea, forming the islet of Filfla.Today, Il-Maqluba is a haven for diverse flora and fauna. The sinkhole's unique microclimate supports a variety of native trees and plants, including Malta's national tree, the Sandarac Gum Tree (Għargħar). It is also a nesting site for the blue rock thrush, Malta's national bird. The site is part of the Natura 2000 EU network, recognizing its importance in preserving Malta's natural heritage.Visitors can admire the sinkhole from a viewing area near the Chapel of St. Matthew, which stands close to the edge. While access to the bottom of the sinkhole is restricted to protect its biodiversity, the views from above are stunning. The area offers a peaceful escape and a chance to connect with nature and local folklore.
