    Discover more about Mosta Rotunda

The Rotunda of Mosta, or Mosta Dome, is a prominent Roman Catholic church and basilica in the heart of Mosta, Malta. Dedicated to the Assumption of Mary, its origins trace back to a smaller Renaissance church built around 1614. As Mosta's population grew, a grander church was needed, leading to the construction of the current neoclassical structure between 1833 and 1860. The design, proposed by Giorgio Grognet de Vassé, was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome. The church's architecture is characterized by a portico with six Ionic columns and two bell towers. The interior is equally impressive, adorned with paintings by Giuseppe Calì and other artists. The dome, boasting a 39.6-meter internal diameter, was once the third-largest unsupported dome in the world. Visitors can explore the church's interior, ascend to the inner balcony for panoramic views, and visit the WWII shelter. The Rotunda's most famous story is the 'Miracle of Mosta'. On April 9, 1942, during World War II, a German bomb pierced the dome during Mass but failed to explode. This event, regarded as divine intervention, saved the lives of the 300 worshippers inside. A replica of the bomb is displayed in the sacristy as a reminder of this extraordinary event. The church is easily accessible by bus from various points in Malta, with the 'Rotunda' bus stop just steps away.
