Porte des Bombes, meaning 'Bombs' Gate' in Maltese, is a historical gateway in Floriana, Malta, originally called Porta dei Cannoni, or 'Cannons Gate'. Constructed in 1721, it served as an outer entrance to Floriana, leading to the main gate, Porta Sant'Anna. The gate's name is derived from the two pillars just outside the gate that bear stone balls fashioned as large water carriers with handles and a spout, known as 'Bomblu' in Maltese.The gate was designed by French architect Charles François de Mondion. In 1868, a second archway was added to accommodate increasing traffic. The expansion was designed by Col. E. W. Dunford of the Royal Engineers. In the early 20th century, modifications were made to allow trams to pass through. The surrounding ramparts were removed in the 1930s, giving it the appearance of a triumphal arch.Porte des Bombes has witnessed historical events, including being captured by French soldiers in 1798. Maltese insurgents challenged the occupants, leaving bullet marks on the gate's front. The gate has undergone restoration, including the installation of a lighting system. Today, Porte des Bombes is a Grade 1 national monument.
