Discover more about St Paul’s Catacombs

St. Paul's Catacombs, located in Rabat, Malta, represent the earliest and largest archaeological evidence of Christianity on the island. These catacombs are part of a larger cemetery that once lay outside the walls of the ancient Roman city of Melite (now Mdina and Rabat). The cemetery's origins trace back to the Phoenician-Punic period, with the catacombs themselves evolving from the 3rd to the 8th centuries AD. The site features a network of underground galleries and tombs, covering over 2,000 square meters. Visitors can explore more than 20 of the catacombs within the St. Paul's cluster. The catacombs reveal a fascinating blend of burial practices from the Punic, Roman, and Byzantine eras. The complex includes various tomb types, from simple shafts to elaborate canopied structures, indicating the diverse social statuses of those buried within. Two halls at the bottom of the entrance stairs showcase 'agape tables,' circular tables hewn from the rock, likely used for ceremonial meals commemorating the dead. The catacombs also contain evidence of different religious communities, including pagans, Christians, and Jews, with menorahs, crosses, and Latin inscriptions adorning the walls. The site was cleared and investigated in 1894 by Dr. A.A. Caruana, a pioneer in Christian-era archaeology in Malta. Today, Heritage Malta manages the site, offering visitors a glimpse into the island's rich history and early Christian heritage.
