Borġ In-Nadur, located near Birżebbuġa, Malta, is an archaeological complex that provides a glimpse into the island's ancient past. The site is uniquely positioned on high ground between Wied Żembaq and Wied Dalam, with its facade pointing towards the entrance of Birżebbuġa Harbour. This strategic location suggests a connection to maritime activities and trade in ancient times.The site's history spans from the late Neolithic period through the Bronze Age (3000-700 BC). The megalithic temple dates back to the Tarxien phase of Maltese prehistory, around 2500 BC. The architecture of the temple follows a four-apse plan, typical of the era, although the megalith walls are relatively low. Uniquely, the site includes a large courtyard enclosed by a boundary wall.During the Bronze Age, the site was transformed into a fortified village. Excavations have revealed remains of Bronze Age huts and a defensive wall, indicating that the inhabitants faced threats from inland attacks. The discovery of Mycenaean pottery shards suggests links with Aegean cultures. The site is believed to have been abandoned around 500 BC.Excavations at Borġ In-Nadur, notably by Margaret Murray in the 1920s and David Trump in the 1950s, have been crucial in understanding Maltese prehistory. The site's location close to Għar Dalam further enriches the historical context of the area.
