Mdina, also known as the 'Silent City,' is a fortified city located on a hill in the heart of Malta. With a history stretching back over 4,000 years, it was first inhabited and fortified around 700 BC by the Phoenicians, who called it Maleth. Later, it became the Roman city of Melite. Mdina served as Malta's capital until 1530 when the Knights of St. John arrived and established their headquarters in Birgu. Today, Mdina enchants visitors with its well-preserved medieval and baroque architecture. The city's walls, largely constructed by the Order of Saint John between the 16th and 18th centuries, offer panoramic views of the island. Within the walls, a network of narrow streets leads to palaces, churches, and squares. Notable landmarks include St. Paul's Cathedral, rebuilt in the Baroque style after the 1693 earthquake, and Palazzo Falson, a historic house museum. Walking through Mdina is like stepping back in time. Cars are largely restricted, contributing to the city's peaceful atmosphere. Visitors can explore the Mdina Dungeons, wander along the city walls, and enjoy the views from the bastions. The city's blend of history, architecture, and tranquility makes it a must-see destination in Malta.
