    Discover more about WWII Shelters

The Mellieħa WWII Shelters offer a compelling and poignant journey into Malta's wartime experience. During World War II, Malta endured relentless bombing campaigns, earning it the unenviable title of one of the most bombed places in Europe. To protect the civilian population, extensive networks of underground shelters were constructed, and the Mellieħa shelters stand as one of the largest examples.Dug by hand, starting in July 1941, the Mellieħa shelters stretch for nearly half a kilometer, reaching a depth of 12 meters. These tunnels provided refuge for the town's population and displaced people from other parts of the island. The complex included essential facilities such as a maternity hospital and a clinic, highlighting the community's resilience and determination to maintain life amidst the chaos. A section was even used to store works of art from the Valletta Museum, safeguarding Malta's cultural heritage.Today, the shelters have been restored and opened as a museum in 2004, offering visitors a glimpse into the daily lives of those who sought refuge within their walls. Mannequins and furnishings recreate the cramped environment, where each person was allocated just a few square feet of space. Displays of gas masks and digging tools evoke the constant threat and the immense effort required to create these underground sanctuaries. Exploring the tunnels, visitors gain a haunting sense of what it was like to live through the war, experiencing the fear, hope, and resilience of the Maltese people.
