Discover more about De Rohan Arch

The De Rohan Arch, or Il-Bieb De Rohan, is more than just a stone structure; it's a symbol of Żebbuġ's historical significance and a tribute to Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc. In 1776, De Rohan attended the village feast, and upon a request from the parish priest, Dun Feliċ Borg, he elevated Żebbuġ to city status, naming it Città Rohan. Although Dun Borg promised to construct two triumphal arches to commemorate the occasion, only one was built due to unforeseen difficulties. De Rohan passed away in 1797, and the people of Żebbuġ decided to erect a single arch at the entrance to the city, partially fulfilling their promise. Designed by mason Giuseppe Xerri, the arch was inaugurated on May 12, 1798, by Grand Master Ferdinand von Hompesch zu Bolheim. The arch's neoclassical design features rusticated Doric pilasters flanking the archway, topped by a triangular pediment. A Gothic-designed niche within the arch contains a portrait of the Ecce Homo, adding to its architectural and historical value. The De Rohan Arch is a Grade 1 national monument and a reminder of Malta's Hospitaller past.
