Discover more about Dwejra Tower

Dwejra Tower, also known as Qawra Tower, is a historic watchtower built in 1652 during the reign of Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris of the Order of Saint John. It formed part of a network of coastal watchtowers designed to protect Gozo from corsair raids and other maritime threats. The tower's strategic location allowed it to communicate with nearby fortifications through fire and smoke signals. Throughout its history, Dwejra Tower has served various purposes. In the 18th century, it was armed with cannons to defend the coastline. It also played a role in guarding Fungus Rock, a nearby islet known for its unique plant, once believed to have medicinal properties. During the British colonial era, the tower continued to be used, including as an observation post during both World Wars. In recent years, Dwejra Tower has been restored by Din l-Art Ħelwa, a Maltese heritage NGO, and is now open to the public. Visitors can explore the tower's interior, learn about its history, and enjoy stunning views of Dwejra Bay, including the Inland Sea and Fungus Rock. Although the Azure Window, a natural arch that was once a major attraction, collapsed in 2017, the area remains a popular destination for its natural beauty and historical significance. The tower is open to visitors and is free of charge. When a flag is flying atop the tower, it indicates that it is open.
