Discover more about Foso e Interior Citadelle De Victoria

The Foso e Interior Citadelle De Victoria, often called simply the Citadel, stands as a powerful testament to Gozo's long and complex history. Perched on a hilltop in the heart of Victoria, the capital of Gozo, this fortified city has been at the center of the island's activity since Neolithic times, with fortifications dating back to around 1500 BC.Originally a Bronze Age settlement, the Citadel evolved into a Punic-Roman acropolis known as Gaulos or Glauconis Civitas. During the medieval period, it became a castle, offering refuge to Gozo's inhabitants. For centuries, the entire population of Gozo was required to spend the night within its walls for safety. The Citadel's defenses were tested in 1551 when Ottoman forces invaded and sacked it. The southern walls were subsequently reconstructed between 1599 and 1622, transforming the Citadel into a gunpowder fortress.Today, the Citadel offers visitors a unique opportunity to step back in time. Explore its narrow, winding streets and discover a blend of Baroque and medieval architecture. Key attractions include the Cathedral of the Assumption, built between 1697 and 1711, and various museums showcasing the island's history and culture. The Citadel also offers breathtaking panoramic views of Victoria and the Gozitan countryside. From its ramparts, one can see the island's green landscape and the Mediterranean Sea. The Citadel is more than just a historical site; it's a vibrant cultural hub. Throughout the year, it hosts various events, including art exhibitions, historical reenactments, and celebrations of local traditions.
