Often referred to simply as the Hypogeum, meaning "underground" in Greek, this site is a unique window into Malta's prehistoric past. Discovered in 1902, it is considered one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Malta.Originally believed to be a sanctuary, the Hypogeum later became a necropolis, with archaeologists estimating the remains of more than 7,000 individuals within its chambers. The complex consists of three levels, showcasing the architectural evolution and skills of the ancient Maltese civilization. The upper level, just a meter below the surface, features chambers used for burial. The middle level contains impressive rooms, including the Main Chamber, Oracle Room, and Holy of Holies, each displaying intricate carvings and designs. The lowest level, currently closed to the public, lies 10.6 meters below ground level.A visit to the Hypogeum is a captivating experience, offering a connection to the enigmatic rituals and beliefs of early human civilization.
