Discover more about Laferla Cross

Perched atop the highest hill in Malta, the Laferla Cross (Is-Salib tal-Għolja) is a striking symbol of faith and a beloved landmark. Located on the outskirts of Siġġiewi, this early 20th-century monument offers visitors a blend of religious significance and stunning natural beauty. The cross was the vision of Fr. Paul Laferla, who sought to create an open-air representation of the Via Crucis, commemorating the Holy Year of 1900. The original cross, constructed under the supervision of Ġanni Mercieca, was completed in 1903 and blessed by the Archbishop in 1904. The Laferla Cross is closely linked to Catholic cultural traditions and constitutes a yearly meeting point for Maltese pilgrims during the night on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday. Standing at approximately 200 meters above sea level, the 16-meter iron cross sits atop a large limestone pedestal, which houses a small chapel. Although the chapel is often closed, it opens during Easter. The site offers sweeping views of Mdina, Valletta, and the surrounding Maltese landscape. The ascent to the cross is part of the experience, with a pathway that winds up the hill, featuring statues depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ. This pathway is particularly significant during the annual pilgrimage when it is illuminated with torches and candlelight.
