Perched on the lower part of St. Christopher Bastion, with panoramic views of the Grand Harbour, the Siege Bell War Memorial is a powerful symbol of Malta's enduring spirit during World War II. The memorial was erected in 1992 to mark the 50th anniversary of King George VI awarding the George Cross to the island, recognizing the exceptional bravery and sacrifice of its people during the relentless siege of 1940-1943.Designed by British artist Michael Sandle, the memorial features a simple yet striking rotunda housing a large bronze bell adorned with an image of Madonna in flames. The bell, the largest in Malta, tolls daily at noon in memory of the war victims. Commemorative plaques encircle the base of the tower, and a staircase leads to a statue of the Unknown Soldier, representing all those who perished in the war. A metal tablet bears the inscription: “At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them”.Malta's strategic location between Italy and Africa made it a crucial target during the war. The island endured intense bombing raids, resulting in the loss of over 7,000 lives. The Siege Bell Memorial serves as a place to contemplate these tragic events and honor the generations of Maltese defenders. Its location beside the Lower Barrakka Gardens enhances the experience, offering visitors stunning views of the harbor and cityscape. The memorial's design blends seamlessly with the historic fortifications, creating a lasting impression on all who visit.
