Discover more about Ta' Ċieda Tower

Ta' Ċieda Tower, also known as the San Ġwann Roman Tower, is a historical landmark in San Ġwann, Malta, with origins that may predate the Roman era. Some archeologists believe the tower is Punic in origin, later adapted by the Romans. The tower was part of a network of defensive towers strategically positioned to protect the island from maritime invasions. During the Muslim caliphate, the site served as a cemetery, and after the expulsion of the Muslims, a church dedicated to St. Helen was erected there. Today, approximately one-third of the tower remains, though it has suffered from neglect. Despite its condition, Ta' Ċieda Tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding Maltese countryside. Located on Triq il-Baruza, the tower is surrounded by modern housing estates. While not as widely known as other Maltese attractions, its historical significance and peaceful atmosphere provide a unique and intimate experience.
