Ta' Ħaġrat: Ancient Temples of Mġarr

Ta' Ħaġrat, located in the village of Mġarr, Malta, is a significant UNESCO World Heritage Site comprising two megalithic temples that date back to 3600-3000 BC. These temples are among the oldest religious sites on Earth, offering a fascinating insight into Malta's prehistoric culture.The larger temple, dating from the Ġgantija phase (3600–3200 BC), features a trefoil plan with a corridor leading to a central court and three semi-circular chambers. Its concave facade includes a monumental doorway, bench, and steps. The smaller temple, constructed during the Saflieni phase (3300–3000 BC), adjoins the larger one and has a simpler four-apse design. Both temples are built from local coralline limestone.Excavations at Ta' Ħaġrat have revealed pottery deposits indicating a village existed on the site before the temples were built, dating back to 3800-3600 BC.
