Discover more about Wardija Tower

Wardija Tower, originally known as Torre della Guardia di Giorno, stands as a testament to Malta's strategic past. Constructed in 1659, it was the final tower in the series of thirteen De Redin towers, built under the reign of Grand Master Martin de Redin. These towers were designed to enhance communication and defense across the island, serving as vital links in Malta's coastal watch system. Located between Żurrieq and Ħal Far, Wardija Tower's position allowed it to relay signals between Wied iz-Zurrieq and Hamrija towers. Unlike some of the other De Redin towers, Wardija Tower was built on a smaller scale. The tower features a square design with two floors, thick limestone walls, a roof turret, and an elevated entrance accessible via exterior stairs. It was originally armed with cannons and mortars. After the British period, the tower was abandoned and fell into disrepair. However, in June 2022, the Restoration Directorate completed a full restoration of the tower. Today, visitors can explore the grounds surrounding the tower and appreciate its architectural features. The tower offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and coastline, making it a worthwhile destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
