Discover more about Blue Grotto

The Blue Grotto, or Taħt il-Ħnejja in Maltese, is a mesmerizing network of sea caves carved into the cliffs along the southern coast of Malta, near Wied iż-Żurrieq. Over millennia, the relentless action of the sea has sculpted the limestone rock into a series of arches and caverns. The most iconic formation is the Blue Grotto Arch, a majestic 30-meter-high natural arch that graces the entrance to the main cave. The grotto's name is said to have originated in the 1950s when a British soldier, struck by its beauty, likened it to the Grotta Azzurra in Capri, Italy. The location's unique combination of sunlight and surrounding caves creates a breathtaking spectacle of phosphorescent colors, with the sea reflecting brilliant blues onto the cave walls and ceilings. Divers can witness an impressive underwater display of red, mauve, green, orange, and yellow hues. Local folklore adds an air of mystique to the Blue Grotto, with tales of a sea nymph who lured fishermen into the caves with her enchanting songs. Today, visitors can safely explore the caves by boat, marveling at the crystal-clear turquoise waters and diverse marine life. The Blue Grotto has also served as a backdrop for various film productions, including Troy.
