Discover more about Hagar Qim Temple

Perched atop a hill in southern Malta, overlooking the sea and the islet of Filfla, lies Hagar Qim, a testament to the ingenuity of Neolithic civilizations. This megalithic temple complex, dating back over 5,000 years, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the oldest religious sites on Earth. The name Hagar Qim translates to 'Standing Stones' or 'Worshipping Stones' in Maltese, reflecting the site's purpose and construction.Built between 3600 and 3200 BC, the Hagar Qim complex consists of a main temple and several smaller structures. The main temple's design is unique, featuring a series of chambers or apses connected by a central corridor. The sheer size of the megaliths, some weighing up to 57 tons, is awe-inspiring, especially considering the builders used only stone tools and spherical stones to move and erect these massive blocks. One of the most striking features is the elliptical hole in one of the megaliths, which aligns with the summer solstice sunrise, casting light on a specific slab within the temple.Archaeological discoveries at Hagar Qim, including statuettes, altars, and animal remains, suggest the temple served as a place of worship, possibly dedicated to a fertility goddess. The site also offers panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding landscape. A modern visitor center enhances the experience with a museum, interactive exhibits, and a 4D audiovisual presentation, providing context and insights into the temple's history and construction. Just 500 meters down the hill from Hagar Qim lies another prehistoric temple site, Mnajdra, accessible by foot.
