    Discover more about Salt Pans

The Salt Pans of Żebbuġ, located on the northern coast of Gozo, offer a captivating glimpse into the island's rich history and traditions. For over 350 years, these coastal salt pans have been used to harvest salt using methods passed down through generations. The pans themselves are shallow, square pools cut into the coastal limestone, designed to trap seawater. During the summer months, seawater is channeled into the pans, where the sun and wind work their magic, evaporating the water and leaving behind pure, crystallized sea salt. The salt is then carefully collected by hand, using traditional tools, a process that offers a tangible link to the past. The salt is sold as souvenirs, and is also used for culinary purposes.Visiting the Salt Pans provides a unique opportunity to witness this age-old craft and appreciate the beauty of the Gozitan coastline. The area is particularly scenic, with the geometric patterns of the pans creating a striking contrast against the blue Mediterranean Sea. The best time to visit is during the summer, when you can see the salt harvesters at work.
