St George's Basilica: Gozo's Marble Masterpiece

St George's Basilica, nestled in the heart of Victoria (also known as Rabat), Gozo, is more than just a church; it's a vibrant center of Gozitan life and a stunning display of Baroque architecture. The basilica's story began in 1672, with the foundation stone laid, and it was consecrated in 1755. In 1958, it earned the title of Basilica, and in 1976, it became an Archpresbyteral and Collegiate Church, linked to the Cathedral-Basilica of Saint John Lateran in Rome.Referred to as the 'Marble Basilica', the church's interior is entirely covered in marble, creating a rich and awe-inspiring atmosphere. The bronze and gold-gilded canopy over the high altar adds to the splendor. The paintings adorning the ceiling and dome are the work of Giovanni Battista Conti from Rome, adding an international touch to the basilica's artistry. However, the wooden statue of St George, sculpted by Pawlu Azzopardi in 1838, remains a focal point of devotion and artistic appreciation. The Basilica also showcases artwork by other notable artists, including Mattia Preti, Giuseppe Cali, and Fortunato Venuti.Beyond its artistic treasures, St George's Basilica is a living parish. With frequent Masses, confession, and other spiritual services, it serves as a daily beacon for Gozitans. The main feast, dedicated to St George, is celebrated in July with a week-long festival featuring concerts and lively street celebrations.
