This UNESCO World Heritage site consists of four megalithic structures, built between 3600 and 2500 BC, offering a unique insight into the lives and beliefs of Malta's prehistoric inhabitants. Discovered in 1913 by local farmers, the temples were excavated and restored, revealing intricate carvings of animals, spirals, and other symbolic designs. The complex comprises four distinct temples: the East Temple, the South Temple, the Central Temple, and a fourth temple of which only traces remain. The South Temple is particularly notable for its detailed carvings and the remains of a colossal statue, possibly depicting a fertility goddess. The Central Temple stands out with its unique six-apse plan, suggesting advanced architectural knowledge. Animal bones and other artifacts found within the temples indicate that they were used for religious ceremonies, possibly involving animal sacrifices.Today, visitors can explore the Tarxien Temples and marvel at the remarkable achievements of Malta's Neolithic people. A protective tent-like structure shelters the site, preserving the megaliths from the elements, while an elevated walkway provides unique viewpoints.
