Discover more about Victoria Lines

The Victoria Lines, a testament to British military engineering, stretch across the island of Malta, utilizing the natural escarpment known as the Great Fault. Constructed between 1870 and 1899, they were designed to protect the Grand Harbour from potential invasions from the north. The lines span approximately 12 kilometers, from Madliena in the east to Fomm ir-Riħ in the west, incorporating a network of forts, batteries, and connecting infantry lines. Fort Bingemma, Fort Mosta, and Fort Madliena served as key strongholds within the Victoria Lines. The infantry wall, characterized by its masonry parapet, provided a defensive barrier, while strategically placed musketry loopholes allowed soldiers to engage approaching enemies. Although the Victoria Lines never faced a direct military test, they remain a significant part of Malta's historical heritage. Today, the Victoria Lines offer a unique hiking experience with panoramic views of the Maltese landscape. While some sections have crumbled over time, the charm and historical significance endure. The trail provides a peaceful escape, inviting visitors to explore the forts, admire the natural beauty, and discover the island's past.
