Wied Ghammieq: A Valley of History and Serenity

Wied Ghammieq, also known as the 'Muddy Valley,' is a captivating destination in Kalkara, Malta, offering visitors a unique blend of natural serenity and historical depth. This tranquil valley is best known as the location of a 19th-century cemetery established to bury the victims of the 1837 cholera epidemic that swept through Malta.The cemetery and chapel were constructed in the 1800s to provide a final resting place for hundreds who perished during the epidemic. The decision to use the area near Fort Ricasoli as a burial ground came after the first cholera cases emerged at the Ospizio in Floriana, and the fort was repurposed as a hospital for the infected elderly. In total, 855 bodies were buried in the modified cemetery. Over time, the cemetery became a place of devotion, with relatives visiting the tombs to pay their respects. In 1878, the remains were exhumed and reburied in a communal tomb, and a monument was erected in their memory.Today, Wied Ghammieq offers more than just a historical glimpse into Malta's past. Its location near the sea and the entrance to the Grand Harbour provides stunning views and a peaceful environment for reflection. Visitors can enjoy the sounds of rustling leaves and flowing water, creating a soothing atmosphere. The valley is also a vantage point for observing ships and boats entering and leaving the harbor, as well as various bird species. Despite its abandoned state, Wied Ghammieq retains its yesteryear charm, featuring an old church and open-air spaces ideal for contemplation and prayer.
