Discover more about Punic Tombs

The Punic Tombs, located in Mellieħa, are a historical landmark that provides a window into Malta's ancient history, specifically the Punic era. Dating back to the 3rd century BC, these tombs are remnants of the Phoenician civilization that once thrived in the Mediterranean. Carved directly into the soft limestone, the tombs showcase the craftsmanship and burial traditions of the time. Initially believed to be solely Punic tombs, archaeological findings suggest that the site also served as Paleo-Christian tombs. The tombs began as simple round chambers and shafts, evolving into more complex rectangular chambers with space for multiple rooms. This evolution reflects the changing burial rituals over the Phoenician, Punic, and Roman periods. Visitors can explore the intricate designs and layouts of the tombs, which were used to honor the deceased with offerings and rituals. The site's hillside location offers views of the surrounding countryside and coastline, creating a serene atmosphere for reflection. While the tombs may appear neglected to some, they offer a unique opportunity to connect with Malta's rich heritage away from the more crowded tourist attractions.
