Discover more about Dwejra Tower

Perched on the rugged Dwejra coastline of Gozo, Malta, Dwejra Tower is a historic watchtower with a commanding view of the Mediterranean Sea. Constructed in 1652 during the reign of Grand Master Giovanni Paolo Lascaris, it formed part of a network of coastal defenses against Ottoman pirates. The tower's strategic location allowed it to communicate with nearby watchpoints using signal fires and smoke. In the 18th century, the tower was equipped with three 6-pounder guns. It continued to serve during the British colonial era and was even manned during both World Wars. Over time, Dwejra Tower fell into disrepair but was lovingly restored between 1997 and 1999 by Din l-Art Ħelwa, a Maltese heritage NGO. Today, Dwejra Tower is open to the public free of charge and provides an informative look into Gozo's military past and the surrounding ecology. From the rooftop, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the coastline, including the site of the former Azure Window, Fungus Rock, and the Inland Sea. The tower also plays a role in protecting the local marine ecosystem as the waters around Dwejra are part of a marine conservation area.
