This subterranean structure, dating back to the Saflieni phase (3300-3000 BC), served as both a sanctuary and a necropolis. Discovered in 1902 during construction work, the Hypogeum is a unique UNESCO World Heritage Site, bearing witness to a civilization that has disappeared.The Hypogeum consists of a complex of halls, chambers, and passages hewn out of globigerina limestone, covering approximately 500 square meters. The structure is divided into three levels: the upper, middle, and lower levels, each revealing different stages of construction and use. The upper level, the oldest section, features chambers reminiscent of Malta's above-ground temples. The middle level contains the most elaborate chambers, with designs and even paintings in red ochre.
