Discover more about Old Prison

Step back in time at the Old Prison, situated within the historic Citadel of Victoria, Gozo. This prison operated from the mid-16th century to the early 20th century, offering a compelling look into the lives of its inmates. Originally connected to the Courts of Justice, the prison is divided into two main sections: the entrance hall, which served as a communal cell in the 19th century, and a block containing six individual cells. The entrance hall now hosts an exhibition on Gozitan fortifications and displays graffiti casts. One of the prison's most remarkable features is the extensive collection of graffiti covering the walls of the cells and corridors. These etchings, created by prisoners over centuries, depict ships, crosses, handprints, names, dates, and various figures, offering a fascinating insight into their thoughts and experiences. Notable inmates include Fra Jean Parisot de Valette, later Grand Master of Malta, who was imprisoned here for attacking a man. After the Knights of St. John were expelled, the prison continued to function, later sharing its role with a new prison. The Old Prison primarily housed individuals awaiting trial. The prison closed in 1962 and was meticulously restored for visitors.
