Welcome to Għajnsielem: Gozo's Gateway
Discover Għajnsielem, Gozo: A peaceful village with historic sites, stunning views, and a gateway to island adventures.
Għajnsielem, the first Gozitan village greeting visitors at Mġarr Harbour, offers a captivating blend of history, religion, and natural beauty. The village's name, meaning "Peaceful Spring," originates from a natural water source that Grandmaster Perellos transformed into a wash-house in 1700. Although the wash-house was demolished in 1954, Għajnsielem retains its tranquil charm and historical significance. Dominating the harbor is the Chapel of Our Lady of Lourdes, offering panoramic views, especially during sunrise or sunset. Fort Chambray, an 18th-century bastion, provides stunning views of Gozo's southern cliffs, Xatt l-Aħmar Bay, and the Comino Channel. A winding road from the fort leads to the secluded Xatt l-Aħmar Bay. The village center features the Lombard-Gothic Parish Church, dedicated to Our Lady of Loreto. Nearby, discover the old parish church and the mysterious "Pjazza tad-Dehra," where the Virgin Mary is believed to have appeared to a local shepherd. This apparition led to the construction of a niche housing a statue where locals gathered to pray. The village became an independent parish in 1855, with the present church consecrated in 1978. Għajnsielem also includes Comino, an island known for its Blue Lagoon.
